With UK adoption, MasterCard says MasterPass mobile wallet now accepted at 20K merchants worldwide

MasterCard's "Morning Brew" social media blog includes a couple of interesting tidbits about its MasterPass digital wallet, gleaned from the company's second quarter earnings call. The service, which collects a user's payment details, loyalty and store cards and shipping and billing address in one location, initially rolled out in Canada and is now accepted in the U.S., Australia and, most recently, The U.K. The wallet can be used for proximity payments (QR codes and NFC) and online transactions.

With the addition of U.K. retailers such as Argos, Boots UK, House of Fraser and The Hut, MasterPass is now accepted by more than 20,000 merchants worldwide, MasterCard said.

Data from MasterCard showed that e-commerce sales in the U.K. increased by more than 12 percent in May, compared to just three percent for retail sales. "MasterPass can help retailers reduce checkout abandonment rates, which affected 37 percent of all online transactions in the first quarter of 2013, equating to more than £6 billion in much-needed revenue per year," Marion King, the company's president for U.K. and Ireland, said in a news release.
