Western Union partners with Kenyan mobile network on funds transfer

Western Union and Safaricom, a mobile provider in Kenya and provider of M-Pesa, have announced an agreement to let 28 million mobile wallet holders to made global transfers over the Western Union network, according to a release.

By using M-Pesa Global, the company’s 28 million mobile wallet users can send funds across Western Union’s retail agent network in more than 200 countries, allowing them to send money to family, friends or others.

More than 1.7 billion transactions are processed per year through the M-Pesa network, which is the equivalent of 50 percent of Kenya’s annual GDP.

Safaricom announced a major upgrade to its M-Pesa network in 2017.
