Western Union debuts new mobile bill payment apps

Western Union Co. is making it easier for billers to offer mobile payment solutions to their customers. The money transfer company has introduced two mobile apps for use with its Speedpay bill payment service.

The Speedpay Mobile Payment Apps is aimed at banks, mortgage provider, insurance companies and the like. The biller can implement the Western Union mobile solution as a branded app, giving customers the ability to pay through Android and iOS tablets and smartphones. Users can also view payment history on the app.

Western Union has introduced a second app specifically for the utility industry. Along with bill payment and payment history, users can monitor usage and track and report outages from their mobile devices.

Western Union said its utility app was integrated with mobile applications offered by iFactor, a company specializing in communications for the utilities industry.

"Western Union recognizes that consumers are seeking more bill payment options, and we are committed to providing a comprehensive set of payment solutions, including mobile apps, SMS, and mobile web, as well as walk-in, phone and online payment services," said David Shapiro, senior vice president of payments at Western Union. "By working with Western Union to implement a mobile strategy, billers can meet consumer demand and execute an efficient entry into the mobile payments space."
