Visa turns to QR codes in Taiwan for mobile payments

Visa plans to introduce a new QR code-based mobile payments system in Taiwan, according to local reports.

The company said that it is using QR codes in the hope that the universal platform will attract larger numbers of users than more limited platforms offered by Android Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. All three of those systems debuted in Taiwan this year, but Visa claims its cardholders in the country are not signing up for those services.

Visa is using the EMVCo standard for QR codes, reports said.

"We support global payment security standards — such as QR code standardization and Visa Token Service — to ensure global interoperability, as well as to keep Taiwan abreast of the world's latest payment development, without compromising on security," Marco Ma, Visa country manager for Taiwan, said in a statement.
