Visa and ANZ to put NFC payments on hold down under

Global payments company Visa Inc. and Australia's fourth largest bank, ANZ, have decided to put mobile payments on hold for a bit. The two companies partnered earlier this year on a small test of mobile payments using near field communications (NFC) technologies.

The test program included 50 employees of ANZ in Sydney and Melbourne. The staff members were given special phone cases containing a MicroSD chip that allowed them to pay for goods at the point of sale with a wave of their phones. The trial ran for four weeks.

According to a joint statement from Visa and ANZ, 90 percent of participants liked paying with their phones and felt secure making NFC purchases.

"Participants in the trial clearly found mobile payments using Visa payWave to be a convenient and easy replacement for cash, ideal for fast, simple transactions," Visa Australia country manager Vipin Kalra said in the statement.

Even though the small program was deemed a success, ANZ is hedging its bets on implementing mobile payments. In the joint statement ANZ said "NFC is here to stay." However, a company spokesman told the Australian the company will take a "wait and see" attitude toward the technology before rolling any program out.
