Ukash launches app-enabled instant-issue prepaid MasterCard

A mobile app-enabled general-purpose reloadable prepaid MasterCard has been launched by e-commerce voucher provider Ukash.

The Ukash Prepaid MasterCard's app, available for iPhone and Android devices, allows customers to check their card balance, view card account details, check recent transaction history, make card-to-card transfers and find the nearest Ukash outlet.

London, U.K.-based Ukash sells paper vouchers containing a security code at retail outlets such as convenience stores and gas stations, which cash-preferred consumers can use for online purchases instead of a credit or debit card.

Ukash said the prepaid card app allows users to top up their card from a pre-registered debit card or by entering the security code from a Ukash voucher. Cash can also be loaded directly onto the Ukash Prepaid MasterCard at U.K. Post Offices or via direct salary payments.

Customers apply for the Ukash prepaid card online, and have the choice of an online-only version and a plastic MasterCard for use in stores, on the Web and at ATMs. Customers who opt for a physical card can start using the online version of their card immediately at websites that accept Ukash until their physical card arrives in the mail.

Ukash Prepaid MasterCards can have secondary cardholders and can be shared between family members or friends. The card-to-card transfer facility between Ukash Prepaid MasterCard holders enables expats and migrant workers to send money home, according to Ukash.

Ukash is owned by its holding company Smart Voucher and is regulated by the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority. The Ukash Prepaid MasterCard is issued by London, U.K.-based Prepaid Financial Services. According to a press release, the Ukash prepaid card is available in four currencies: British pounds, Euros, the Polish Zloty and U.S. dollars.
