The Hunger Games sees record mobile ticket sales

Mixed in with all the fanfare over The Hunger Games and its $155 million opening weekend at the box office is this important bit of information: The Hunger Games broke the record for most tickets ever sold via a mobile device. This from online ticket site Fandango.

According to Fandango, 22 percent of ticket buyers for The Hunger Games purchased their tickets online. That's the largest share of sales for any movie in Fandango’s nearly 12-year history, the company said. And a large percentage of those sales were done using the company's mobile channels. In fact, Friday, March 23 was the top day for mobile ticket sales in Fandango history.

"Fandango’s record-breaking percentage of the film’s opening weekend is a testament to the growing popularity of online and mobile ticketing as the way to go to the movies," said Fandango's EVP and GM Rick Butler in an announcement. "It’s rare to see the first film in a franchise performing like an established sequel, but 'The Hunger Games' is a true phenomenon. Fans have given it our highest 'Must Go!' rating, with Web and mobile ticket sales still going strong on Monday."

Fandango is the nation's leading moviegoer destination and sells tickets for nearly 20,000 screens in the U.S. The company's movie ticketing app has been downloaded more than 22 million times and its online and mobile channels receive 30 million visitors a month.
