Sweetgreen raises $150M for mobile food delivery rollout

Sweetgreen has raised an additional $150 million to build an app-based delivery program in 2020, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Led by Lone Pine Capital and D1 Capital Partners, True Ventures and other existing investors, the investment has increased the company's valuation to $1.6 billion from its billion dollar unicorn status less than a year ago.

The chain said it will also use the money grow its 400 office locations to 600 by the end of the year and to open restaurants in Miami, Denver and Austin, Texas.

Delivery has been top focus at Sweetgreen over the past year. Although it already offers delivery via third-party companies, including Uber, it acquired Galley Foods, a Washington, D.C.-based meal service delivering ready-to-eat fresh meals. The move allowed Sweetgreen to leverage Galley Foods' knowledge of logistics technology, live courier operations and high-volume production, according to the company.

Founded in 2007, the salad-centric business sources local ingredients for nearly 100 locations across the U.S.
