Sony Ericsson selects NXP to provide NFC tech for its new phones

NXP Semiconductors N.V., the provider of near field communication (NFC) technologies for the Google Wallet, announced it has been selected to supply embedded NFC solutions for Sony Ericsson's new Android-based smartphones. According to the announcement, Sony Ericsson intends to use NXP solutions that include an embedded secure element for mobile transactions.

“This latest move from Sony Ericsson is another proof point of the strong momentum and potential of NFC,” NXP CEO and President Rick Clemmer said in the announcement. NXP expects to increase the sales of its NFC products 2-4 times as a percentage of its total revenue in the second half of 2011, Clemmer said, up from approximately one percent currently.

"NFC offers a game-changing opportunity for mobile phone manufacturers to provide creative and innovative smartphones to their customers," Clemmer said.

The announcement did not say when Sony Ericsson's NFC-enabled smartphones will hit the market.
