RIM to join NFC party

According to reports from Mobile World Congress, Research in Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie said most of its BlackBerry devices shipped during 2011 will support near field communication (NFC). The comments were made during a keynote presentation on Wednesday at the Barcelona event.

RIM's BlackBerry devices make up approximately 25 percent of the U.S. market in smartphones, according to Nielsen. However, devices using the BlackBerry operating system have been losing market share for some time and RIM’s OS now trails Apples' iOS and Google’s Android mobile operating system in the U.S.

This is the second notable NFC-related news item out of the Mobile World Congress in two days. During a Deutsche Telekom presentation on Tuesday, DT executives included Apple as a partner in its NFC plans for 2011 seeming to confirm that NFC will be a part of the next generation of iPhones.

Google is already including NFC support in the newest release of its Android mobile OS.
