The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stopped accepting cash at three of the major bridges and tunnels into New York City, including the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnel, in response to the emergency orders from New York and New Jersey related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a release from the agency. 

The orders sent home all non-essential workers and forced almost all private businesses to work remotely, as of 9 p.m. Sunday. The cashless toll policy will remain as long as the emergency orders remain in force. 

Motorists using EZ-Pass will be able to operate as usual, while drivers that usually pay with cash will get a bill sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, based on license plate information.

The three bridge crossings from New Jersey to Staten Island, including the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing, only accept cashless payment as a rule.
