NYC issues RFI for mobile parking ticket payments

Document mentions Apple Pay, bitcoin and PayPal as payment options.

The New York City Department of Finance last week issued a request for information to obtain input about a mobile app motorists can use to pay parking tickets and dispute infractions.

“Prospective vendors should understand that this RFI is not a request for proposal but rather a request for information that will assist the City in understanding A) the current market environment for mobile payment options that could provide greater ease for vehicle owners; and B) the current market for technologies that would allow someone to request a hearing and submit evidence," the department wrote in the document

One of the department's proposals would enable bitcoin users to pay their parking tickets with the cryptocurrency. The deaprtment also mentions Apple Pay and PayPal as a means of payment, according to the RFI.

The city issues eight to 10 million parking tickets per year, resulting in some $600 million in revenue. Motorists at the moment can pay parking tickets via mail, online, or in-person at designated locations.
