New Diebold ATM concepts elevate mobile tech

The company says its Irving and Janus terminals incorporate new technologies that 'bridge the digital and physical worlds of cash.'

Diebold Inc. today announced the introduction of two new banking concepts that anticipate the consumer banking experience of the future with the use of cardless transactions, mobile integration, and faster, more convenient access, according to a company press release. The new concepts are debuting this week at Money20/20 in Las Vegas.

Diebold's screenless, self-service Irving ATM dispenses cash without requiring a card — or for that matter, a PIN pad, card reader or screen, the release said. Citi is testing the Irving concept at its innovation lab in New York, the release said.

Irving was designed to provide faster, more convenient consumer access to cash, and features:

  • Bring your own device — Transactions are scheduled and authorized on the user's smartphone, eliminating the need for the card reader, PIN pad and physical screen.
  • Increased speed and security — eliminating the need for a card at the ATM shortens cash withdrawals to less than 10 seconds and provides greater security by mitigating card fraud due to skimming.
  • Consumer-recognition technology — accountholders are identified via NFC as they approach the device, and gain instant access to cash through contactless technologies such as QR codes, NFC and iris-scan biometric technology.
  • Small footprint — the terminal is nearly one-third (32 percent) smaller than a standard through-the-wall ATM, and on the consumer-facing side is up to 37 percent narrower than standard ATMs.

Diebold's second banking concept, Janus, is a dual-sided self-service terminal that can serve two customers at once, and that offers advanced functionality in a standard ATM footprint. Janus features include:

  • Shared technology — the device shares alarm boards, connectivity and monitoring technology without compromising security, transaction speed or ease of use, Diebold said.
  • Mobile access — Janus uses NFC or QR code technology for transactions, eliminating the need for a card reader. Printers are also eliminated in favor of email or text receipts.
  • Tablet touch screen — an interactive tabletop touch screen enables multiple check imaging, ID scanning for new accounts, and document signing.
  • Video teller access — device users can connect to a live remote teller for immediate assistance with basic questions or to complete more complex transactions.
  • Forward-looking design — the terminal includes privacy panels, more intuitively integrated screens and a single-slot cash interface within a contemporary enclosure.

"While digital channels continue to evolve, cash will continue to have a role in consumer transactions," Diebold executive vice president, self-service technology Frank Natoli said in the announcement. "That's where Diebold comes into play — to bridge the digital and physical worlds of cash in unprecedented ways. Our latest concepts embody a new era of banking and put the user experience at the top of the pyramid to connect consumers with their money when and how they see fit."
