McDonald's taps mobile order-ahead feature for contest

McDonald's is making use of its new mobile order and pay function in its app very worthwhile for customers. Its entering all users in a contest to win that ever-elusive McGold Card that has so long been the subject of internet chatter

The chain has finally confirmed the existence of the card, which grants its bearers free McDonald's for life. Only a handful of people have gotten their hands on one, but those lucky few are about to be one more thanks to the contest, which runs through Friday, Aug. 24.

This marks the first time McDonald's has ever given away a McGold Card through a contest and this time the chances of winning one are available only to users of the McDonald's mobile app. Through the app's features, customers can pick up orders curbside, in-store or at the drive-thru.

The winner of the McGold card will also receive a customized 24-carat golden phone case to mark their membership. The first McGold Card was actually awarded to former St. Louis Mayor Alfonso J. Cervantes in 1965, followed by a few other notables including Michigan's governor and the king of Sweden.

McDonald's app-based mobile order and pay is available for almost 14,000 U.S. restaurants.
