JCPenney confirmed that it stopped accepting Apple Pay,, in connection with an April 13th  deadline that required merchants to retire old magnetic stripe functionality.

The retailer decided to stop accepting them mobile wallet after deadline from a card-brand, which the retailer declined to name, requiring merchants to accept EMV contactless functionality, according to a statement provided by the department store via email.

"Given the resources and lead time associated with meeting the new mandate, JCPenney chose to suspend all contactless payment options until a later date," the retailer said in the statement. "Customers still have the ability to complete their transactions manually by inserting or swiping their physical credit cards at our point-of-sale terminals in stores, an option employed by the vast majority of JCPenney shoppers."

The retailer said less than 8% of JCPenney transactions were completed using contactless payment. When asked specifically if JCPenney accepted Google Pay, Samsung Pay and other mobile wallet systems, the retailer responded that it accepted all payments transmitted over NFC.
