Hungarian mobile payments service ruled to be illegal state monopoly

A top European court ruled that the Hungarian state operated mobile payments service, Nemzeti Mobilfizetesi Zrt is illegal, according to a report by Reuters.

The European Court of Justice found that control over the mobile payments service, which has been in effect since July 2014, is contrary to EU law.

The court said that even if the operation "constitutes services of general economic interest" the supply of those services cannot be controlled by a state monopoly.
