Google adds in-app billing to Android Market

Google announced on its Android Developer blog that its in-app billing service is ready for developers. The service allows developers of applications built on Google's Android mobile operating system to include a mechanism for users to buy digital goods while using the application.

The availability of an in-app billing service means application developers can now add value to their applications and further monetize their games and services. Content providers and publishers can charge customers in small increments as they read pages, download music or stream videos.

The service uses the Android Marketplace to process payments and charges developers a 30 percent fee on each purchase.

Google's in-app billing service is another step in mobile payments becoming a common payment method for digital goods across multiple mobile platforms. In-app billing is already available for developers of applications for Apple devices.
