G&D to be TSM for Australian Commonwealth Bank

German tech company Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) announced it is providing its Trusted Service Manager (TSM) solutions for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Commonwealth Bank recently launched its Commbank Kaching NFC payment program.

As a TSM, G&D provides services including personalization of the payment function and management of the payment app over its lifecycle. In short, the TSM is the important link between the mobile network and the bank. It's the service that secures the NFC payment process and ensures the phone being used to make a payment is the one that matches the account being used.

"Our Trusted Service Management solutions allow our customers to implement robust and reliable mobile phone payment systems simply and securely via the mobile network," said Michael Kuemmerle, the Group Executive for Mobile Security at G&D, in the announcement.

"Our highly secure and certified TSM centers in various regions are an important building block in the NFC ecosystem that will help to speed up the spread of mobile payment systems," Kuemmerle said.

Commbank Kaching is currently available on iPhone 4 and 4S devices using a special case with a Secure Element in it to facilitate the data transfer required for a contactless payment as well as communicating with the app on the device. G&D said an Android version of the app is coming.
