Clinkle, the inscrutable startup that vows to shake up the mobile payments world, has a new COO: former Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy.

McCarthy spent 12 years with the online media streaming service before leaving in 2010. He has since been an executive adviser to Technology Crossover Ventures and served on the boards of several Silicon Valley companies.

Earlier this year, Clinkle secured $25 million in seed funding from a who's-who group of venture capitalists and private investors, including Accel Partners, Andreesen Horowitz, Intel Capital, Intuit, former PayPal head Peter Thiel and Bob Joss, former vice chairman of Wells Fargo. Richard Branson has since gotten involved.

Though the San Francisco startup, founded by 22-year-old Stanford University student Lucas Daplan, promises to deliver something revolutionoary, it has so far revealed scant details about its technology, which will initially be aimed at college students.

A video leaked to TechCrunch purports to show how the app works. According to TechCrunch, Clinkle apparently is meant to replace the physical wallet with a mobile, digital wallet that includes all of a user's financial accounts and lets them make payments without swiping a card. It's also designed to facilitate simple peer-to-peer payments, the site said.

"Lucas has a grand vision for broad-scale disruption of a huge consumer market enabled by growth in mobile devices and brilliant software innovation. That's why Clinkle has been funded by some of the smartest money in Silicon Valley and why I signed on to be Lucas' partner."

Clinkle now has more than 50 employees.
