Electric cars meet mobile payments

Now you can fill up your car while using your cellphone and not have to worry about blowing up. Liberty PlugIns, a company that provides electric vehicle charging, announced it is partnering with QuickPay Corp. to bring a mobile payment option to its electric vehicle charging stations.

Liberty said the company's combined solution will allow drivers to pay for a charging session via text message or smartphone app, using the QuickPay (QP) mobile payment service. Electric motorists will receive a charging authorization code they can use at Liberty PlugIns charging stations. Users will also be able to locate QP-enabled charging stations when using the solution to search for parking.

"The adoption of EVs is rapidly accelerating in the U.S., and parking operators need to be ready to meet the demand for parking spaces with EV charging capability," said Chris Outwater, CEO of Liberty Plugins. "Mobile payments make adding this feature simple and cost-effective for drivers and providers alike."

The unique charging codes from QP eliminate billing or networking hardware, Liberty said. Plus, parking facility owners can generate new revenue streams by offering the EV charging service as a complement to parking without having to install additional pay stations or deal with third-party billing systems, the company said.
