Diebold goes global with NFC card readers for ATMs

Diebold Inc. announced today that it is making a contactless card reader available to all financial institutions globally. The solution allows FIs to leverage near field communication at the ATM, the company said in a news release.

Via NFC, the user interface can read contactless payment cards, mobile devices with NFC support, and other forms of contactless media such as fobs, stickers and tags.

The Diebold contactless card reader can be installed as as an upgrade on existing Opteva ATMs. It coexists with both dip and motorized magnetic stripe card readers to allow an alternate method to initiate transactions.

When a contactless card — which contains a chip or processor capable of exchanging information with a contactless reader — is placed within a few inches of the Diebold NFC reader, the card is detected within seconds.

With NFC technology, there's no need for the customer to swipe or insert a contactless card at the terminal, resulting in enhanced speed, convenience and security for users of the self-service channel, Diebold said in the release.
