CommBank adds online checkout for mobile devices

Commonwealth Bank of Australia has launched an online checkout service using MasterCard's MasterPass.

The solution lets consumers use their mobile devices to make online purchases at MasterPass-enabled retailers, including more than 200 in Australia, the bank said. That list includes Event Cinemas, The Iconic, Ozsale and Booktopia.

MasterCard said it has formed partnerships with 20 Australian tech partners since MasterPass launched in February, including both major payment gateways and shopping carts.

"We know consumers prefer the comfort and convenience that dealing direct with their own bank gives them," Matt Barr, MasterCard's head of market development and innovation, Australasia, said in a news release. "Studies show the connection to your own financial provider is particularly important when it comes to embracing digital payments."

Kristie Atkins, director of sales for Amalgamated Holdings Limited, which owns Event Cinemas, said MasterPass is part of the company's focus on delivering innovative customer experiences that drive sales online and on mobile.

"When buying tickets, customers want their experience to be speedy and convenient," she said in the release. "Making MasterPass available is just one more way we are ensuring they can do just that, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, no matter where they are."

Commonwealth Bank previously released its Kaching mobile banking app and contactless stickers.
