California company launches electronic fare collection system

California-based Delerrok Inc. has announced the launch of TouchPass, cloud-based electronic fare collection offered as a subscription service that uses either smart cards, a mobile app or barcode tickets.

The Rogue Valley Transportation District in Medford, Oregon deployed the service in October after a trial on all its buses, according to a press release.

"Despite the impact of digital technologies on our lives, over 70 percent of North American agencies remain mired in the analog world of coins, tokens, paper passes and transfer slips," Delerrok CEO Bob Hamilton said in a statement. "TouchPass puts state-of-the-art electronic fare collention within the reach of every one of these agencies."

Drawing on advances in device, cloud and network technologies, TouchPass provides all the features of the largest fare systems and more, according to the announcement. Passengers can purchase fare products anywhere—on their smartphones, via web browsers or at agency ticket windows and participating merchant locations—and ride using smart cards, a mobile app or barcode tickets.
