UK mPOS provider SumUp releases API for merchants, developers

U.K.-based mobile POS solution SumUp is opening up. The company announced it's launching an API for its mobile point-of-sale solution that will let merchants and developers integrate payment processing functionality into their own apps.

Available for both iOS and Android apps, the SumUp API will allow access to a full payment solution and let businesses process credit and debit card payments using their own applications on a smartphone or tablet.

"The launch of our API is a logical next step for us on the way to making cashless payments in everyday life radically more simple," said SumUp CEO Daniel Klein. "More merchants than ever before are using mobile technology to engage with their customers. Unfortunately, until now a lot of them have had to stop short of actually taking payments through their apps as they haven't had access to the secure technology and know-how needed to do so. The release of our API means that this issue is solved.  They can now boost the potential of their apps by accepting payments seamlessly and securely, even on the go."

Like fellow European mPOS solutions mPowa, iZettle and payleven, SumUp is hoping to replicate the success Square has seen in the United States. SumUp recently announced it had secured euro funding in the double-digit millions for its expansion throughout Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, and Austria.
