Square plans to accept Apple Pay

Founder Jack Dorsey says support will come in 2015.

Square plans to accept Apple Pay at some point next year.

Square Founder Jack Dorsey told CNN last week that the company wants to help businesses accept all payment forms, including Apple Pay. He recently said that bitcoin acceptance is on the docket next year at the physical point of sale. Square Market, the company's online marketplace for small businesses, already features bitcoin acceptance.

Dorsey told CNN he did not see Apple Pay as competition to Square.

"We're not building a credit card. We're not building a payment device. We're building a [cash] register, and this register accepts all these forms of payments," he said.

At the moment, Square’s system does not accept contactless payments. The company next year will begin deploying new EMV-compatible card readers to those merchants who buy one. There is no indication that those readers will accept contactless payments.
