PayPal adds Visa Checkout, Masterpass option for Braintree merchants

PayPal has expanded its relationships with Visa and Mastercard to include the ability for Braintree merchants to add the card networks' digital wallets as a payment option during the online checkout process, according to separate press releases about the deals.

Braintree is a PayPal company that processes payments for the likes of Airbnb, Eventbrite, Pinterest and Uber.

PayPal's announcement with Mastercard is a bit more expansive as it also includes making the card brand a clear payment option within PayPal as well as increasing PayPal's presence at the physical point of sale.

Under the expanded partnership with Mastercard, consumers and small businesses will be able to instantly cash out funds held in their PayPal accounts to a Mastercard debit card. PayPal will also be provided certain financial volume incentives and, as a result of the commitments made under this agreement, will no longer be subject to the digital wallet operator fee.

"Customer choice and partnership are fundamental principles for PayPal that guide how we operate as a company, giving our customers greater opportunities to more easily manage and move their money online, in app and in-store," said Dan Schulman, president and CEO of PayPal. "With each partnership agreement that we sign, we further expand the ubiquity and value of the PayPal brand and improve our own economics. Mastercard has been a trusted partner for many years. By collaborating and innovating together we will continue to help move digital payments forward and improve payment experiences for our mutual customers."

As for the Visa announcement, Visa Checkout will be available to U.S. merchants through Braintree's SDK in early 2017.

"At Braintree, we're singularly focused on giving our merchants the flexibility and freedom to choose from the best commerce experiences available," said Juan Benitez, GM, Braintree. "Offering simple and easy access to Visa Checkout through Braintree's platform reinforces our commitment to merchants as we continue adding relevant payment services to our platform, and will be an important way we continue to expand on our partnership with Visa."
