India MNOs add in-app purchase capability with mopay partnership

Mopay announced its entry into the Indian market with an HTML5 in-app billing solution, the company said in a press release on Monday.

Mopay is launching the HTML5-for-mobile version of its direct carrier billing platform on all large Indian carriers.

The company said in the announcement it is attempting to address the problem it sees with consumers trying to pay for in-app purchases with premium text messages. Mopay said the HTML5 browser interface is more ideal for in-app payments. Even if the carrier network is unavailable, mopay's product still works if the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, according to the press release.

"India's mobile phone market is the world's second-largest after China in numbers of customers," Ingo Lippert, CEO of mopay, said in a statement. "The demand for digital content is enormous, but only mopay's latest generation of direct carrier billing will be able to unlock the full commercial potential. Our merchant base has always been eager to proactively enter the market. I think we can safely say the time is now."
