Google Wallet DOA in Oz

Google executive said she has more exciting things on her plate than mobile payments.

Google's Australian managing director told attendees at a business luncheon event that she has no plans to introduce Google Wallet in a country where banks and other players dominate mobile payments, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I have no plans to launch it in Australia," Maile Carnegie said at a Trans-Tasman Business Circle lunch Thursday in Australia. "My job is to really look and say, 'What are the big problems or opportunities to solve in Australia?' and there are much more exciting things on my plate."

Google Wallet debuted in the U.S. in 2011, but ran into problems immediately and was limited to Sprint because it could not get access to the secure element on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon smartphones with NFC thanks to the Isis mobile wallet. Google Wallet is now able to conduct payments on those phones thanks to Host Card Emulation.
