CarCharging and DoubleBeam to bring mobile payments to electric car charging

Mobile payments and electric cars would have seemed at one point the stuff of scifi. But Car Charging Group Inc., a provider of convenient electric vehicle charging services across the U.S., announced it will be working with mobile retail service provider DoubleBeam to develop a proprietary mobile application that will provide EV drivers with the ability to pay for their charging sessions directly from their mobile phones.

CarCharging said it will use DoubleBeam’s white-labeled mobile wallet service as the foundation for its app. The service will let customers pay for EV charging services via electronic check, debit from their bank account, or by credit card.

“We are proud to partner with DoubleBeam in order to create our mobile app,” said Michael D. Farkas, CEO of CarCharging. “In an effort to simplify the payment process and expand our offerings, we plan to provide EV drivers with the ability to manage charging at single-family homes; or dedicated parking spaces at apartments, condos, and workplaces; and tie them into our public EV charging through one universal app for a combined price.”

The CarCharging mobile application will operate basic functions of residential charging equipment and be available for iPhone, Android, Windows, and Blackberry phones, the company said. CarCharging’s public charging locations on the ChargePoint network will also be accessible through the app, and drivers of EVs will also be able to find CarCharging locations.

CarCharging did not say when the app would be available.
