Alipay adds fingerprint authentication to mobile wallet

Company partners with Nok Nok Labs for biometric payments on the Galaxy S5 smartphone.

Nok Nok Labs, an authentication company and founding member of the FIDO Alliance, last week announced Alipay will use the company’s NNLTM S3 Authentication Suite to enable secure online payments via the fingerprint sensor technology on the Samsung Galaxy S5, according to a press release.

Alipay customers, who make purchases and transfers in Alipay's mobile application, Alipay Wallet, no longer need to enter a password and just apply their fingerprint to the sensor.

Alipay has deployed the NNLTM Multifactor Authentication Server (MFAS), which provides a unified, flexible authentication infrastructure and communicates securely with the client present on the Galaxy S5, according to the announcement. The Nok Nok solution was delivered in partnership with Lenovo Group Ltd., another founding member of the FIDO Alliance.

"Working with Alipay, a major player in the global online commerce, to provide an easy, secure experience for their customers is tremendous validation for the FIDO movement," Phillip Dunkelberger, president and CEO of Nok Nok Labs, said in a statement. "As a global leader in delivering Internet-scale services to their customers, they needed a solution that can scale to meet future authentication requirements, while ensuring that consumers get a secure, yet easy-to-use solution today."
