The popularity of smartphones is often used as proof in itself of their growing importance to consumers. But really, it's the mobile apps that turn the smartphone into a game console, entertainment center, shopping assistant and productivity tool that make a smartphone useful.
The success of the "app economy" has encouraged a multitude of developers to create apps for every possible use or interest. There are now more than a million apps vying for space on consumers' devices, many of them completely useless. Consumer ratings provide some indication about which apps are worthwhile, but with literally a million of them available, even consumer feedback is of only marginal utility.
The big question then for developers of truly useful apps has become, "How do I get my application noticed amid all that noise?" Simply building a good app doesn't guarantee that anyone will download and use it. Sadly, utility and good design just aren't enough anymore. And the challenge of getting traction for a gerat app is made even more difficult for developers hoping to monetize their efforts.
While it may seem like a daunting task to successfully launch an app, given the sheer numbers of them vying for consumer attention, it's far from impossible. There are strategies developers and app marketers can use to generate downloads from loyal users who will engage with the app, make in-app purchases, register or upgrade to a paid version. And, of course, tell their friends about it.
In a free webinar on August 21, Jo Wightman, director of client services for Fiksu, a provider of a mobile app marketing platform, and Carrie Chitsey, CEO of mobile marketing company 3Seventy, will discuss how mobile app developers can market their apps. During the live event, "Mobile App Monetization — Finding Loyal Users Who Engage and Transact," the speakers will provide advice that developers can use to get their apps discovered by interested consumers. The webinar is sponsored by Fiksu and will be moderated by Mobile Payments Today editor James Wester.
As director of client services for Fiksu, Wightman has helped more than 100 clients build successful app businesses for both Android and iOS mobile operating systems. She has developed global marketing campaigns for apps ranging from gaming to finance.
In her role as CEO of 3Seventy, Chitsey is responsible for the company's strategic vision and she is involved in all aspects of the business including strategy, creative, sales and marketing. She is also a frequent speaker on the future of mobile technology.
