Groupon has been rumored to be testing a mobile POS solution like Square or VeriFone's SAIL. While that story is still only a rumor (for now), Groupon is definitely investing in mobile. The company announced on its blog that it's adding iOS point of sale provider Breadcrumb to its family.
Breadcrumb offers an app solution specifically built for the hospitality industry that turns an iPad into a thin client POS system. It's designed to work with existing equipment on the premises, such as cash drawers and printers, but processes transactions and stores data in the Breadcrumb Cloud Server.
In a post on the company's blog, VP of mobile, Mihir Shah, said Breadcrumb will continue to be its own entity and Groupon will offer its product to merchant partners. But the real value is the ability to offer and manage Groupon's daily deals.
"(F)or Groupon merchant partners that use Breadcrumb’s point of sale system, we’ll be able to significantly improve the process of redeeming a Groupon," Shah said.
No financial details on the transaction were discussed.
