Zong expands platform to game consoles, TVs

Zong, a provider of direct mobile billing (DMB) services, announced it is expanding its platform to enable its mobile payments services across a number of new platforms and software environments, including Adobe Flash; Unity, a popular environment for video games; Interactive TV; gaming consoles; and the mobile Web.

The Zong DMB service allows consumers to pay for purchases of digital goods through their mobile phone bills or prepaid mobile accounts. After a customer’s mobile phone number is collected by the merchant, Zong verifies the user’s information by sending a text message to the handset. Upon receiving confirmation, the purchase amount is placed as an item on the customer’s monthly mobile phone bill or debited from the prepaid mobile account.

DMB services are especially popular with gaming and social media sites where younger consumers may not have access to credit card accounts.

Zong also announced that its in-app payment system for the Android mobile operating system is now available for Android version 3.0, or Honeycomb, for tablets. The in-app payment system verifies users' information and bills their mobile accounts without requiring users to leave the application or game.

Zong CEO David Marcus said, “Mobile payments are gaining traction on all platforms and devices because the convenience is unrivaled. Zong’s new platform enables merchants and developers to integrate mobile payments in virtually any environment, be it on a PC, a mobile phone, a tablet or a television.”
