WorldRemit rolls out mobile transfer in Sri Lanka

Consumers in 50 countries can now transfer funds directly to eZ Cash mobile wallets.

WorldRemit today launched instant mobile money transfers to Sri Lanka as consumers in 50 countries can now transfer funds directly to eZ Cash mobile wallets, according to a press release.

The eZ Cash service is currently available to Dialog, Etisalat and Hutch subscribers, totaling 14 million people, according to the announcement. Sri Lankans, even those without bank accounts, can use eZ Cash to transfer funds to friends, pay water and electricity bills, shop for goods at physical merchants and online, and even pay health or life insurance premiums.

WorldRemit noted in the announcement that some three million Sri Lankans live abroad. Remittances to Sri Lanka contributed $7.03 billion to the Sri Lankan economy in 2014 — nearly 10 percent of total GDP, according to the World Bank.

"We already offer mobile-to-mobile money transfers for countries as far flung as Ghana, Indonesia and Fiji," Alix Murphy, senior mobile analyst at WorldRemit, said in a statement. "We're delighted to roll out the same service to Sri Lankal; quick and convenient transfers that can be sent just like an instant message."
