WeChat beats Apple Pay to Hong Kong

However, it still might take WeChat several months to roll out its wallet service to all users in Hong Kong.

Tencent's WeChat Wallet service is now available to users in Hong Kong — just as Apple is working to release its mobile payment system in the city later this year.

The South China Morning Post reported that WeChat Wallet users in the pilot program can link their credit cards to the service and make in-app WeChat purchases for things such as movie and flight tickets.

However, it might take WeChat several months to roll out the service to all users in Hong Kong, according to the South China Morning Post.

The newspaper also reports that Hong Kong WeChat Wallet users will have access to the same features as consumers in mainland China. Hong Kong users will not be able to perform person-to-person payments within the app and they will be unable to make in-store payments via a QR code.
