Visa makes investment in mobile data transmission firm Lisnr

Lisnr Inc., a company that uses ultrasonic data transmission to transmit mobile payments, said it has received a capital investment and entered a commercial relationship with Visa.

The technology allows merchants and payment providers to transmit or accept payments across a variety of touchpoints, including tap-and-go, point-of-sale, voice controlled, e-commerce purchases from homes and in-store pickup.

"Lisnr is a better method versus alternatives like NFC or QR codes for mobile payments globally; it decentralizes scenarios across a wide range of payments moments with advanced data protection, ability to transact at a distance and concurrent transactions — all which are designed to accelerate payments overall," Eric Allen, CEO of Lisnr, said in a company release. "We are excited about our growing relationship with Visa and we are looking forward to continuing to drive innovation in financial services."

The company has been around since 2012 and major investors include Intel, Jump Capital, Mercury Fund, R/GA and Synchrony Financial.
