Visa exec confirms mobile wallet product for 2012
According to tech site Pocket Lint, Steve Perry, commercial director for Visa Europe, said Visa is bringing its own NFC mobile wallet to market sometime in August or September of next year. The comments came during Visa's European security summit in Frankfurt, Germany.
Perry confirmed the new wallet product will be in keeping with the mobile payment strategy Visa announced earlier this year. In other words, Perry said the new product will be open to other issuers and card brands.
"It will work with not just Visa cards from multiple banks, but other cards like American Express," Perry said.
In May, Visa laid out an ambitious global mobile payment strategy including an open mobile wallet product, though at the time the company said the product would be rolled out this fall.
"We are introducing new solutions for ecommerce and mobile devices that provide the same 'Visa-quality' experience — convenience, reliability and security — people enjoy when using their Visa cards at a retail location," said Visa CEO Joseph Saunders in May. "In doing so, we are accelerating the global shift to digital payments by harnessing our brand, products, network and 50-plus years of payments experience."
