Verizon working on non-Isis mobile payment option (UPDATED)

(UPDATED) According to the Wall Street Journal, Verizon Wireless will be offering another mobile payment option that isn't related to the ISIS Network, its joint venture with AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA.

The article said Verizon is working with direct carrier biller Payfone Inc. to offer a one-click payment option for mobile shoppers. The option would let consumers place digital goods on their monthly bills or link their payment service to a credit card account. Any Verizon customer accessing a mobile shopping site with a mobile browser would have access to the payment method.

"We have the gamut covered with mobile payments," Greg Haller, vice president of marketing for Verizon, told the Journal. "This is one of the big pieces for us to finish that mobile commerce strategy."

Haller told the Journal the new service is complementary to what Verizon is doing with ISIS.

Payfone signed a partnership with American Express Inc. in April to create a mobile shopping cart product that lets consumers pay for online purchases using their mobile phone number and link their mobile numbers to accounts on American Express' Serve network.

UPDATE: Additional quote from the WSJ article added to clarify the new payment method from Verizon is not meant to be competitive with ISIS. Instead, the new service is for online, especially m-commerce, purchases.
