VeriFone to release tablet POS device

The mobile point-of-sale battle keeps getting more and more intense. According to a report by Bloomberg, VeriFone Systems Inc. CEO Douglas Bergeron said his company will be releasing a new accessory for its PAYware mobile payment product later this year that fits on tablet computers to allow merchants to accept credit and debit card payments.

Bergeron told Bloomberg the device is currently being tested by several retailers and that it would be released sometime after August. The report said no price for the device was available.

The VeriFone device is inviting comparisons with Square's recently announced Square Register product. Unlike Square's product, though, VeriFone's accessory works with both Samsung's Galaxy tablet computer and Apple's iPad. Bergeron also said the device works wirelessly with retailers' financial systems, so it is presumably intended for larger merchants instead of the micromerchants Square targets.

Nevertheless, the announcement is sparking plenty of discussions about the rivalry between the two companies since the VeriFone news came a day after Square revealed it had received $100 million in venture funding.

Speaking about VeriFone's tablet device, Square COO Keith Rabois told Bloomberg his company is following its own plan and isn't overly concerned by it.

"We have our own vision for improving buying and selling," Rabois told Bloomberg. He said his company doesn't "pay much attention to what others are doing."
