US consumers ready for digital driver's license

The majority of the U.S. public is ready for the traditional driver's license to go mobile, according to a consumer survey from Radius Global Market Research and MorphoTrust USA.

Overall findings from the survey include:

  • Eighty percent of respondents are interested in a mobile driver's license app.
  • Seventy percent of respondents are interested in using their mobile phone to renew their driver's license.
  • Sixty-four percent of millennials expressed the highest level of concept acceptance and said they would recommend it to a friend.

The companies polled nearly 4,000 U.S. consumers ranging in age, gender, region, according to a press release. To qualify for the study, participants had to own a smartphone and have a valid driver’s license or state identification card.

"As smartphones continue to be part of our daily activities, it's a natural progression that a driver's license or state ID card evolves to meet the changing times and increasing sophistication of U.S. consumers," Bob Eckel, president and CEO of MorphoTrust USA, said in the release.

The study follows a 2016  pilot program in which MorphoTrust launched the first U.S. mobile driver's license in partnership with the state of Iowa.
