US company rolls out app to pay with bitcoins via Google Glass

A California firm has developed an app that lets users pay for in-store items with bitcoins via Google Glass. With the GlassPay app, developed by RedBottle Design, Google Glass and Android users will be able to scan the barcodes of items in a physical shopping cart, which will then be added to a virtual cart. Users can then pay with bitcoins and skip the checkout line.

According to CoinDesk, the GlassPay shopping cart works in real time, and retailers and merchants don't have to pay card-processing fees for its use. But retailers may worry about an increase in shoplifting, the site said, with people pretending they've paid for items when they haven't. Last year, for example, a survey of nearly 5,000 people by the money-saving website Watch My Wallet found that 30 percent had stolen items when using self-service checkout.

RedBottle CEO Guy Paddock tells CoinDesk that his company will work with retailers to create customized solutions to resolve proof-of-purchase issues.

GlassPay is being demo'd at the DEMO 2013 conference in Santa Clara this week and is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2014, after the launch of Google Glass.
