U.S. Bank to test NFC-enabled mobile payments for iPhone users

U.S. Bank will be offering FlexPerks Visa cardholders in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Portland, Ore., the option to try a new mobile payment product called U.S. Bank Go Mobile. Customers carrying an iPhone 4 or 4S will be shipped a special case from DeviceFidelity that will enable the phones to use NFC technologies to pay for purchases the point of sale.

U.S. Bank said it's introducing the service in a beta release to new FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature account holders but will be introducing it more widely in 2013.

Along with enabling NFC in iPhone 4 and 4S devices, the case will also have an extra battery in it to extend the phone's charge time.

"We have incorporated all of the feedback we have received from prior pilots and our customer research into this latest offering and we are excited to offer U.S. Bank Go Mobile in these two markets," said Dominic Venturo, chief innovation officer for U.S. Bank Payment Services.

Along with DeviceFidelity providing the cases, other partners in the test effort include Visa providing its paywave technology to handle the contactless payments at the point of sale, and Datacard Group to securely issue and provision the accounts.
