Toshiba announces new NFC controller
If, as naysayers claim, NFC isn't going anywhere, don't tell Toshiba Corp. The Japanese handset maker announced the launch of a new NFC controller for mobile devices that will begin mass production in October.
According to Toshiba's announcement, the market for mobile payments is growing, and its controller will enable multiple concurrent connections with three different secure elements, the chips that store and protect sensitive data like payment information. (That could help with issues over which stakeholder "owns" the secure element, a problem plaguing the deployment of NFC-enabled payment platforms.)
The fact that electronics manufacturers continue to support and develop equipment using NFC bodes well for the technology even though analysts like Gartner have revised their predictions on the speed with which the technology will be adopted.
