Time to get cash? Check your smartwatch

The direct-banking FI has added a feature for Android smartwatches that directs the user to the nearest ATM or cash-back store.

Ally Bank, a direct banking provider, has introduced two new features for smart devices, including Touch ID for its mobile banking app and an ATM locator app for Android Wear smartwatches.

Touch ID lets customers to securely log into the Ally mobile app using just the fingerprint sensor on their device. The feature is available for any TouchID-enabled Apple device.

The Android Wear app allows Android watch users — including Ally Bank customers and noncustomers alike — to get information on the five nearest ATM and cash-back locations. The FI has offered the service for Apple Watch users since September.

Information provided by the app includes:

  • location name and full address;
  • distance and directions to the location; and
  • Whether it is an Allpoint ATM, regular ATM, or cash-back store (Allpoint ATMs are free to use for Ally customers).

Additionally, Ally is building the capability to support popular mobile payment services such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay, according to a press release.

The first of these will be Apple Pay, which is in the advanced stages of development and will be coming soon to Ally Bank customers.

"We are always looking at ways to leverage new technologies at Ally Bank to provide a richer experience for our customers," said Ally President and CEO Diane Morais. "These two latest features, as well as the work underway on mobile payments services, are simply part of our ongoing drive to meet growing consumer demands for mobile-related services."
