Taiwanese carrer Chungwa to debut mobile payments with QR codes this summer
Taiwan's central news agency has reported that Taiwan's largest mobile network operator, Chunghwa Telecom Co., plans to launch a mobile payment service using QR codes. Consumers will scan the codes using their smartphones to make payments, the report said.
The new service will begin in June pending regulatory approval.
Chungwa is also a part of a consortium of Taiwan's largest mobile carriers looking at offering an NFC-enabled mobile wallet product. That initiative was launched earlier this year.
Though the story mentioned a trial of NFC-based mobile payments that Chungwa launched last year, it doesn't say if the new QR code payment program will work alongside any program offered by the carrier joint venture or if it will be offered by Chungwa as an alternative program.
