T-Mobile offers low cost banking with prepaid Visa card

T-Mobile U.S. is offering a raft of cheap banking services with its new reloadable T-Mobile Visa prepaid card, issued by The Bancorp Bank.T Mobile remote check deposit capture image

The T-Mobile prepaid card comes with the Mobile Money by T-Mobile smartphone app, and has no charges for card activation, monthly maintenance, in-network ATM withdrawals or for replacing lost or stolen cards. There are no minimum balance requirements and no overdrafts or overdraft fees.Customers can make check deposits from smartphone cameras, pay bills and make no-fee cash withdrawals from a network of 42,000 ATMs nationwide.

Bellevue, Wash.-based T-Mobile is aiming Mobile Money at the 68 million U.S. adults who do not have traditional bank accounts and have to rely on alternative financial services.

"It's ridiculous that families, especially those who can least afford it, have to pay so much for basic check cashing services that many of us take for granted," Mike Sievert, T-Mobile's chief marketing officer, said in a news release.

T-Mobile U.S.'s 46.7 million wireless subscribers can register for their personalized T-Mobile Visa Prepaid Cards online (https://t-mobilemoneyservices.com/). Cards will also be available in participating T-Mobile retail locations and, beginning next month, at U.S. Safeway stores. T-Mobile U.S. has 70,000 points of distribution.
