T-Mobile, Gemalto to offer NFC payments, services in Poland

Gemalto is having a big news week. Two days ago the digital security company announced an agreement with Vodafone to support that carrier's new mobile wallet. Today Gemalto announced it has been selected by T-Mobile to provide the trusted service manager platform for the mobile network operator's rollout of NFC services. Gemalto's TSM platform will manage provisioning and security of accounts on mobile devices in several major European markets, beginning with Poland.

PTC, T-Mobile's network operator in Poland, will deploy a full range of Gemalto services, including its TSM platform, mobile wallet software and its UpTeq NFC SIM cards. The nationwide upgrade of 14 million PTC subscribers to Gemalto SIM cards is scheduled to happen by the end of this year.

"Gemalto's NFC solution provides PTC with the excellent flexibility required to easily ramp up additional mobile contactless service," said Jean-Claude Deturche, Gemalto SVP for mobile financial services. He added that Gemalto's expertise in project delivery, acquired through dozens of TSM implementations, is key to the smooth deployment of PTC's NFC program.

The PTC program is the first nationwide NFC rollout in Poland, Gemalto said. The country already has 10 million contactless banking cards and more than 90,000 contactless terminals deployed. NFC services will include payments as well as access to mass transit and parking systems, loyalty programs and stadium ticketing for major events.
