Swatch rolls out contactless payment watches in Switzerland

Following a successful introduction in China, Swatch has launched four SwatchPay! watches with contactless payment in Switzerland.

The new line uses NFC technology, allowing the customer to hold the device underneath a contactless payment terminal to complete a transaction, according to a press release.

"Continuous innovation is a key strand of the Swatch DNA," said Carlo Giordanetti, creative director at Swatch. "This latest advance, with the introduction of the fastest and simplest tokenization, makes it easier than ever to pay 'forever' — token up your Swatch, swipe it and you're done."

Swatch said partners on the launch include mobile security firm Giesecke+Divrient and Mastercard, while partner banks include Cembra Money Bank, Cornercard, Credit Suisse, Swiss Bankers, Swisscard, UBS and Viseca.

Swatch said all customers need to do is buy one of the watches, link it with an eligible payment card, and set up the device through the app while in a Swatch store.

G+D, in a press release, said the watches use its wearable enablement platform and wearable app, and does not require any energy on the battery life, noting battery drain can be an issue with wearable payment devices. The company said tokens can be inactivated or deleted from the watch at any time.

Swatch said it previously launched a line of contactless payment watches in China during the summer of 2017.
