Survey shows an increase of mobile use in retail

With multichannel retail growing in acceptance and significance, many retailers are experimenting with mobile as part of their in-store experience.

A survey from Ecoconsultancy polled 1,000 U.K. consumers and 1,000 U.S. consumers and asked about the influence that mobile had on a typical shoppers retail experience.

Here are some of the findings:

  • The data shows that the number of consumers that have made a purchase on mobile has roughly doubled in the U.K. since 2011 from 13 percent to 25 percent of consumers. In the U.S. the figure has increased from 12 percent to 28 percent in the same period.
  • Almost a third (32 percent) of U.K. consumers have used their mobile to find a retailer's nearest store or opening times, with this figure rising to 41 percent in the U.S.
  • In the U.K., 43 percent of respondents said they had used their mobile to compare prices and look at product reviews while out shopping, up from 19 percent in 2011. Among U.S. consumers the number has increased from 20 percent last year to 50 percent in this year's survey.
