Study: Coupons and security will influence mobile payment adoption

A new study by research firm StrategyOne, commissioned by point-of-sale terminal maker VeriFone, finds most adults in the United States are aware of mobile payments. It also finds many consumers are willing to give mobile payments a try, especially if they get some value besides waving their phones for a payment. But the study warns consumers are still concerned about the reliability and safety of mobile payments.

According to the survey, 57 percent of those who responded said they believe mobile payments will become widespread in the next three years. Additionally, 22 percent of those surveyed expressed interest in paying for goods and services using their mobile devices. A higher percentage, 41 percent, said they would use mobile payments if they could apply discounts and coupons from their mobile devices.

The survey said security of personal data is a large concern for consumers. Sixty-three percent of respondents worried their personal information is more vulnerable making purchases with a mobile device than with a debit or credit card. Nearly half (47 percent) said that the security of their personal and financial data is a bigger driver to mobile payment adoption than discounts and special offers. And 39 percent said they would feel confident in mobile payment security if a regulator organization certified transactions.

"There's a clear consumer interest in mobile payments as well as a desire to connect with retailers and brands in personalized ways," said Dave Talach, vice president of global product marketing at VeriFone, in the report. "Providing additional benefits and gaining consumer trust through security in the retail experience will be key."

The survey included 1,036 adults and was conducted online during April 2011.
